William Hulme’s Grammar School SEND Resource Base, Manchester
CoARC proposals for a new-build Specially Resourced Provision (SRP) resource base for pupils with autism and language impairment have been revealed following funding approval. A challenging brief provided the opportunity to design a building that meets the diverse needs of the pupils who have their lessons in the main school, only coming to the SRP to use the specialist SEN facilities.
The proposed building is located central to the schools existing primary and secondary accommodation allowing inclusive access for all school year groups. The design concept for the buildings form and materials is subtly influenced by aspects of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) toys and objects, providing areas of calming and relaxation, as well as sensory rich play and stimulation, all within a familiar context.
The facilities include learning resource areas such as adaptable group rooms (for each support class group), small group rooms for one-to-one learning/individual quite time, a therapy room (to receive support relative to the pupils needs), sensory room, quiet / calming space(s) and, a life skills kitchenette. Staff and administrative accommodation is located to afford passive observation, whilst toilet and personal care facilities are provided relative to pupils needs. Considerable emphasis has been placed on designing circulation spaces that serve to enrich the buildings core purpose. External spaces include a sensory garden, external learning and play areas with interactive covered spaces. The design of both internal and external areas are an important part of the brief and provide a holistic specialist facility for 30 pupils with special educational needs.
